Before diving into Elaine’s Part 2 on detoxing, I wanted to share some thoughts from my recent travels around Europe, just as I did after my trip to Venice last year. Even though I’m not a fan of using the word “skinny,” it seems to describe the French well. You don’t often see obesity in Europe—and when you do, it’s usually among North American tourists, sadly.
Interestingly, you also don’t see those overly muscular gym-goers. So, what’s the secret to the French allure? Here are a few observations:
1. **They walk everywhere.** Walking helps burn calories, reduces stress, and calms the mind after a hectic day.
2. **They are social creatures.** Every bar and café is always buzzing with people engaged in lively conversations without distractions like mobile phones. Studies show that social interaction reduces stress, leading to better overall health.
3. **Dining in, not taking out.** In Europe, people savor their coffee and meals while chatting at cafés, unlike in Toronto where everyone seems to be in a hurry with their to-go cups.
4. **Mindful eating.** Snacking isn’t as common. The French eat when they’re hungry, enhancing digestion and avoiding unnecessary calorie intake.
5. **They embrace good fats.** French cuisine often embraces rich flavors in moderation, focusing on quality over quantity. There are fresh markets everywhere, ensuring access to fresh produce rather than processed foods.
I’d love to hear your insights, especially from readers outside North America. What are your observations?

Joy
I adore how the French enjoy meals. In Canada, I sometimes feel too indulgent, but in France, it’s the norm to enjoy champagne and pâté. I’ve even penned an article about these enticing habits of French women. Can’t wait for another joyful patio session when I’m back from France.
It’s always refreshing to hear how fresh and vibrant the European lifestyle is. The emphasis on fresh foods and being social certainly seems to have its benefits, as noticeable during my trips to Greece and Spain.

The French lifestyle truly does embrace balance—thoughtful eating, reduced stress, and community interaction seem to be key. It’s a reminder of keeping things simple and fresh, which many of us could benefit from.
