JUMP TO RECIPE
I clearly remember my first experience with grilled cheese and sliced fruit about 20 years ago at a cozy Belgian-style café in Toronto called Le Petit Dejeuner. It was completely different from anything I’d ever tried! Growing up, my grilled cheese didn’t include fruit, especially not with such high-quality cheese. The fresh apple added a crisp sweetness that paired perfectly with the melted cheese. This quickly became my favorite lunch, alongside a salad, when I worked at a marketing agency nearby. It was truly the ultimate comfort food!
Naturally, I had to recreate this comforting dish and introduce our daughter, Vienna, to this delightful combination using the best quality cheese. I believe that a meal is only as good as its ingredients, which is why we love using L’Ancêtre Cheese Factory products from Quebec. We’ve been incorporating them into our meals for over a decade because they’re simply the best!
L’Ancêtre cheese is organic, meaning no pesticides, GMOs, or synthetic fertilizers—just pure, delicious cheese made from pasture-raised cows that roam freely. The cows’ diet mainly consists of organic pasture, which leads to high-quality milk and increases their longevity. After all, we are not just what we eat, but also what our food eats!
This sandwich might not be everyone’s preference since it contains dairy and gluten (though you can opt for gluten-free bread). The recipe offers options to make it cow-dairy-free and gluten-free as well. The cheese itself is gluten-free, containing less than 1% lactose and no animal rennet.
L’Ancêtre Cheese Factory also makes goat cheese, which I’ve tried and found delicious too. Most importantly, this grilled cheese uses 100% real ingredients. Adding sliced apple or pear makes it unforgettable and adds fiber and antioxidants. When making it for myself or Walker, I often add Dijon mustard, which is a fantastic combination. For Vienna, we keep it simple with just cheese and apple or pear.
Vienna’s favorite lunchbox sandwich is incredibly easy to make, and here’s the recipe for one serving.
You can find this amazing cheese at your local health food store or in the natural foods section of your supermarket. They also offer other products like delicious butter. As for bread, we love Toronto’s local sourdough from Blackbird Bakery, and for a gluten-free option, we use Golden Flax Thornbury Bread. I’m eager to try this with our Best Ever Paleo Bread as well!
