I absolutely love stopping by my favorite juice bar for a warm elixir. During the winter, I’m drawn to spicier mixtures rather than a green juice or wheatgrass shot. I crave something that heats me from the inside out, like this delicious Golden Elixir! It’s not only tasty and warming, but it’s also wonderful for brightening skin and supporting gut health.
This drink is loaded with vitamin C, enzymes, and plant compounds rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties—all while being super tasty!
**What is an Elixir?**
You might wonder what an elixir is. Simply put, it’s a magical or medicinal potion. I love this description! This elixir feels magical because it boosts your well-being and is filled with beneficial plant compounds for your skin and gut health.
**Benefits of Each Ingredient:**
**Turmeric & Ginger**
These two are powerful spices from the same plant family—rhizomes. I’ve mentioned their benefits before, so I’ll be brief. Turmeric and ginger are anti-inflammatory wonders that can help reduce gut inflammation and skin redness. You’ll find turmeric in a beloved soup recipe of mine. Turmeric has been treasured in Indian culture and Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years!
**Pineapple**
This sweet fruit is rich in fiber and extremely hydrating, promoting both skin and gut health. More fiber and hydration ease digestion, support the microbiome, and prevent constipation. Pineapple also contains bromelain, an enzyme that aids protein digestion and reduces inflammation. You can find pineapple in a Keto Green Smoothie recipe I love.
**Oranges**
For this recipe, I used Cara Cara oranges, but any type works. Their color is a striking blend of grapefruit and blood orange. Oranges are high in vitamins A and C, which help maintain healthy skin, including your gut lining. The anthocyanins in these oranges fight free radicals and reduce inflammation. They’re also rich in folate, which is great for mood and mental health. Check out my Orange Mint Baked Salmon or Orange Chicken with Black Rice recipes that also use oranges.
**Limes**
Packed with vitamin C, limes are beauty-enhancers and protectors for the skin. Being high in antioxidants and very hydrating, they’re great, especially during the winter. You’ll find limes in my Creamy Avocado Pasta Salad.
**Additional Tips:**
– *If fresh turmeric isn’t available, use 1 tsp of ground turmeric powder instead.*
– *Allow boiled water to cool slightly before blending to prevent the top from popping off due to steam.*
**How to Enjoy the Elixir:**
I don’t recommend storing it in the fridge for more than a day, as mentioned in my video, since it won’t stay fresh.
**Is Daily Consumption Recommended?**
Though you can drink it daily, I suggest rotating it with other options for variety. I usually make a batch for a week and then prepare another one after a few weeks.
This recipe has become a household favorite, especially during the chilly Canadian winters.
**Blender Cleaning Tip:**
If your blender jar becomes stained, try blending half a lemon with warm water, or simply run it through the dishwasher. Daily use will eventually fade the stain.
**Pineapple Substitute:**
If you have a pineapple intolerance, papaya is a fantastic substitute. It offers enzymes that aid digestion and reduce inflammation. Mango can also be used, though it’s more about vitamin C and flavor, as it lacks the same enzymes.
**Other Elixir Combinations:**
I like adding grapefruit and black pepper or using cilantro and lime with fresh pineapple—both combinations are delicious!
**Frequency and Storage:**
A batch should last a week if you stick to drinking 1/2 cup at a time.
**Mixing with Sparkling Water:**
Adding sparkling water won’t diminish its benefits—it’s a fun twist!
**For Less Powerful Blenders:**
You can strain the elixir through a sieve or drink it as is, depending on your texture preference.
**Freezing and Using Ice Cubes:**
When freezing leftovers, just thaw the cubes to enjoy them—no extra hot water needed.
