11 Reasons to Steer Clear of Harmful Perfumes and Colognes: A Natural Beauty Guide

As I made my way to the door in my underground parking garage, I was immediately hit by a strong scent of perfume. It was so intense, likely because of the phthalates found in many perfumes, which make the smell linger, even in a large, airy space like a parking garage. As I reached the elevators, I saw two young women nearby. They were clearly the source of the overpowering scent, probably unaware of the potential risks: hormone disruption, allergies, and even links to cancer. I shared the elevator ride with them and held my breath until I reached the 16th floor.

Perfume is a major annoyance for me because of its harmful effects. However, I often remind myself that people likely use these products without knowing the risks. More awareness could help change this. That’s why I’ve decided to write this piece. Please help me share this with as many people as possible. I’m very much against perfumes and colognes for various reasons, and here are some key points to consider:

1. The term “fragrance” in products can include up to 3,000 different ingredients, many of which haven’t been tested for safety.
2. These unlisted ingredients can be irritants and may cause allergies, migraines, and asthma symptoms.
3. Perfumes and colognes can trigger asthma attacks in 75% of people who suffer from asthma.
4. Some fragrance ingredients in lab experiments have been linked to cancer and damage to the nervous system.
5. Environment Canada raises concerns about synthetic musks, which are toxic to aquatic life and pose health risks to humans.

Some ingredients in perfumes are not even meant for fragrance but to enhance its lasting power, as I noticed in the garage.

For instance, diethyl phthalate (DEP) is commonly used in cosmetics for its ability to make scents last longer. These phthalates are cheap and versatile and are found in many popular perfumes. I wonder if Britney Spears ensures her perfume is free of phthalates. Somehow, I doubt it. More reasons to discard your fragrances; phthalates pose several health risks:

6. They interfere with hormonal balance, according to the European Commission on Endocrine Disruption.
7. They are linked to earlier puberty in girls.
8. They can reduce sperm count in men and cause developmental issues for male fetuses when exposed during pregnancy.
9. They are associated with obesity and insulin resistance in men.
10. Health Canada has flagged phthalates as potentially causing liver and kidney failure in children who chew or suck on products containing them.
11. The U.S. Clean Water Act lists DEP as a Priority and Toxic Pollutant due to its environmental toxicity.

Looking to smell nice without harmful chemicals? So do I. I prefer natural methods. Here’s what I suggest:

1. Use essential oils like lavender, diluted with a carrier oil such as almond oil, ensuring the essential oil is clean and natural.
2. Apply coconut oil liberally after a shower to carry a light, beach-like scent.
3. Embrace a fragrance-free lifestyle, letting your natural pheromones do the work of attracting others.

Fragrances can sneak up on you, and the more often you avoid them, the more noticeable and unpleasant they become. I cannot stand it when others hold my baby, and I’m left with a lingering scent on him. Let’s spread awareness.

All in all, fragrances serve a personal thrill but can be a public nuisance. Once you know the potential harm they cause, you might think twice. Please be considerate and go fragrance-free. Thank you for reading and sharing this message!

If you’re looking for “clean” essential oils, it’s best to purchase from health food stores and choose organic products.

It’s concerning how many people unknowingly apply harmful substances to their skin. This article has certainly given me something to think about. My dog has severe allergies, and when household members avoid using scented products, it significantly helps.

Awareness is key. By learning more, we can make informed decisions about what we use on our bodies.
