Embrace Today: Lovingly Release Your Past

Embrace Today: Lovingly Release Your Past

In my recent Dose of Joy newsletter, I shared that I attended an incredible event last Thursday called the Top 10 Event, organized by my friend Stuart Knight. There were supposed to be 10 speakers, but only 9 could make it. Each speaker had just 10 minutes to share their thoughts, and they all had unique and thought-provoking messages. It was truly a fantastic evening!

One speaker who left a lasting impression on me was Jully Black. She’s an amazing singer, and she talked about not letting your past dictate your present. This reminded me of the song “Past in Present” by Feist, which I listened to endlessly back in 2007.

Here are some of the lyrics:
“The scarlet letter isn’t black
Gotta know who’s got your back
Because they’re right in front of you
Because they’re telling you the truth
So much present inside my present
Inside my present so…so much past
Inside my present inside my past
Inside my present
So, so
Feeling it from dark to bright
When a wrong becomes a right
When a mountain fills with light
It’s a volcano, it’s a volcano
It’s a volcano, it’s a volcano
So much present, inside my present
Inside my present
So, so much past
Inside my present, inside my present
Inside my present
So, so much past
Inside my present
Inside my present…
So, so much past”

In 2007, I found myself trapped in my past, and it’s interesting how much I clung to that song. Although I still love it, it no longer holds the same meaning.

My past was constantly overshadowing my present, and I struggled to live in the moment. This affected everyone around me, as I was not fully present. While reflecting on the past and learning from it is valuable, I had reached an unhealthy state of mind, and my heart was often devoid of joy that year.

Now, I occasionally reminisce about the past, but I no longer let it define my present life. I encourage you to do the same. To truly be joyful, focus on the beauty of this very moment.

Being present not only enriches your own life but also makes being around you more enjoyable for others!

Stay joyous,
Joy

I really appreciated this reflection. Thank you!
You’re welcome!
