Black Bean and Sweet Potato Chili

Black Bean and Sweet Potato Chili

JUMP TO RECIPE

When the chill of fall and winter sets in, there’s nothing quite like the comfort of hearty, warm meals. My go-to choice is my Sweet Potato Black Bean Chili—a one-pot wonder that’s both cozy and nourishing, brimming with vegetables.

This chili is a delightful way to nourish your body, and it’s thick and satisfying, thanks to all the veggies and black beans. Dr. Tracey emphasized on our podcast that working 30 different vegetables into your weekly diet benefits your microbiome, and this chili helps you get there!

For spices, if you have a chili powder blend, feel free to use it. I personally like to mix-up my own spices with freshly ground cumin seeds, cayenne, paprika, and red chili flakes. If you’re a fan of that smoky hint, smoked paprika is an option too.

It serves 6 to 8 people, so it’s perfect for a group or plenty of leftovers. If you’re preparing it for someone sensitive to spice, you might want to cut back on the cayenne and chili flakes and taste as you go. Pair it with some quinoa or brown rice, and maybe a kale salad, for an entire meal.

I’d love to hear your thoughts if you try this recipe! Let me know in the comments below, and feel free to suggest any other recipes you’d like to see on Joyous Health. Also, let’s connect on Instagram and our Facebook community page!

Stay warm and stay joyous!

This Sweet Potato Black Bean Chili won over my husband, who usually misses having meat in meals. It’s definitely a keeper!

I’m thrilled you’ve been enjoying the recipes! Regarding nutritional information, apps like “MyFitnessPal” can provide fairly accurate breakdowns. I don’t include nutritional stats because I want to encourage intuitive eating and using your own wisdom rather than tracking calories or nutrients. However, I understand that guidance is necessary for therapeutic diets like yours. I hope the app helps!

Quick Tip: Always drain and rinse your beans, but there’s no need to drain the tomatoes. I’ll update the recipe to make this clearer.

Considering adding lentils? Go for it—but if you use dry lentils, add extra water. It will still be delicious.

Feedback from a reader: “I made this chili last week and halved the spice level to suit my taste. Adding a bit of salt tied the flavors together beautifully. You might consider including ‘salt as needed’ in the recipe. Thanks for your amazing culinary creations!”

I’m delighted to hear that you and your family enjoyed it so much. Even your son, the meat-lover, couldn’t resist! It’s heartwarming to know my recipe brings joy to your table.
