Inner balance is the key to achieving beauty and health. What works for one person might not work for another, and I believe that beauty comes from a blend of good nutrition, self-care, mindfulness, fun and exercise, relaxation, and supportive relationships, among other factors. My new book, “Eat Pretty Every Day,” offers daily ideas for nurturing your beauty throughout the year. It includes recipes, challenges, mantras, DIY projects, and self-care tips. I’m excited to share the five essential elements of my nutritional routine with you. While no single food or nutrient will immediately transform your skin, small changes and consistent habits can have a big impact on your appearance and well-being over time.
Here are my top five tips for eating beautifully every day:
1. **Start with a Warm Morning Drink**: Hydration is crucial for many bodily functions related to beauty. After a long night with no fluids, rehydrating in the morning is essential. Warm drinks like herbal tea (tulsi and ginger are favorites), warm lemon water, or plain warm water help detoxify and aid digestion. It’s the first thing I consume each morning.
2. **Maintain Blood Sugar Balance**: Keeping your blood sugar stable is key to avoiding energy dips, mood swings, cravings, and hormone imbalances that can affect your skin’s glow. I prefer meals and snacks made from whole foods that include protein, healthy fats, and plenty of fruits and vegetables to keep me satisfied and energetic.
3. **Include Fermented Foods**: Your skin’s radiance is closely linked to your digestive health. To keep my digestion in good shape, I eat at least one small serving of fermented foods daily and take a probiotic supplement. I also practice mindful eating to fully engage my body in the rest-and-digest mode.
4. **Enjoy Leafy Greens**: Leafy greens are a powerhouse for skin health. I recommend having at least one serving of greens every day, and I make this a priority for myself. Greens offer various nutritional benefits, including vitamin A for smooth skin, minerals like iron and magnesium, and vitamin C for collagen health and elasticity.
5. **Add Fresh Herbs and Spices**: Enhancing meals with fresh herbs and spices easily boosts their beauty benefits. I love cilantro and parsley in green smoothies and cinnamon, cardamom, and cumin with roasted vegetables. These ingredients are rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, and phytochemicals that promote beauty.
