Caring for My Skin Naturally: My Rosacea Journey

Caring for My Skin Naturally: My Rosacea Journey

Here’s a revised version of the content, aimed at enhancing readability and simplicity:

Brace yourself, this is going to be a long one. I’ve been dealing with noticeable rosacea since 2017. By noticeable, I mean it reached a point around four years ago where I felt the need to cover it up. Looking back at old photos of my naturally rosy cheeks, I realize it’s been around for even longer than I thought.

UPDATE: I’ve included a list of all the products I use at the end if you scroll down. I’ve added a toner to my routine because, when I first wrote this, we didn’t have the Magical Mist – which has been amazing for my skin! You can also watch my skincare routine on Instagram.

I seem to be the quintessential case for rosacea – I’ve always blushed easily whether I’m embarrassed, stressed, or have just exercised. With my Celtic and Scandinavian roots and fair skin, plus knowing it runs in my family, I guess I’m predisposed to this skin condition.

Last year, I saw a dermatologist when it was particularly bad out of curiosity and desperation. Sadly, their advice wasn’t helpful but neither was it surprising (more about that in another post).

I’ve spent countless hours on Reddit, browsing rosacea forums, blogs, and scientific articles. What I’ve learned is that what works for one might not work for another because rosacea can be triggered by various causes. Assuming you have some experience with rosacea, I won’t dive into what it is – you’re likely well-versed already.

Instead, I’ll share what has worked for me naturally. It’s been a long journey filled with different lotions, potions, and treatments. Most products targeting rosacea don’t consider its different forms. Mine began as a butterfly rash on my cheeks, which I initially mistook for lupus, but that was ruled out.

Over time, it evolved into a permanent sunburn-like appearance, accompanied by acne, bumps, dryness, and on occasion, extremely warm cheeks. Luckily, I haven’t experienced ocular rosacea or nasal disfigurement.

Today, my skin is better than it’s been in months. Sharing this improvement fills me with joy.

Rosacea has been an emotional and humbling journey. I’ve gone from having seemingly perfect skin to being self-conscious about going out without makeup. While I’m not fully comfortable yet going makeup-free, I never leave the house without my tinted BB Cream (sunscreen).

Rosacea’s root cause is inflammation, and it’s also closely linked to skin microbiome and gut health – research even suggests a connection to leaky gut.

If you haven’t explored dietary changes and the foods to avoid, I suggest starting here. Following that, check out advice on what foods support calm skin. However, remember that diets and triggers vary from person to person. Even if a specific food works for me, it might not for you, and vice versa.

Now, let’s talk about my skincare routine which isn’t the sole solution but has helped immensely. Here you’ll find product recommendations and a DIY magical serum.

In another post, I detail the natural supplements crucial for gut health and rosacea management. I’m dedicated to my supplements!

Here’s how I care for my skin:

1. **Face Washing**: Use filtered water, not direct tap water, as chlorine is harsh on sensitive skin. A home filter, even just for your showerhead, can significantly help retain your skin’s moisture.

2. **Face Cloths**: Use gentle, organic bamboo cloths instead of abrasive ones. Wash them after one or two uses with natural detergent.

3. **Avoid Fragrance**: Don’t use products with fragrances or certain essential oils, as they might irritate rosacea.

4. **Gentle Face Wash**: Opt for soothing, natural organic cleansers like Fresh Face Cleanser, which calms and nourishes the skin without additives.

5. **Use a Toner**: Magical Mist Toner balances skin pH and keeps it healthy and hydrated.

6. **Serums**: Use hydrating and calming serums like Hella Hydrating Serum. Combine it with rosehip oil and hyaluronic acid for best results.

7. **Moisturizer**: I recommend Iremia Soothing Lotion, but only for dry, non-acne-prone rosacea skin.

8. **Jade Roller**: Great for cooling down hot, flushed skin. Keep it in the freezer and use it during flare-ups.

9. **DIY Serum**: Mix jojoba with blue tansy and lavender essential oils for a calming effect without clogging pores.

10. **Natural Sunscreens**: Opt for natural sunscreens to avoid exacerbating rosacea. I like Coola BB Cream and Perfect Sunscreen by Consonant.

11. **Spot Treatment for Bumps**: Use Prosacea for specific, painful bumps. It’s a homeopathic sulfur treatment—recommended as a last resort.

Before I sign off, I’d like to thank friends and experts who’ve supported me, including fellow nutritionists and naturopaths. Their guidance has been invaluable.

Stay strong and remember you’re beautiful, inside and out. If you’re fighting rosacea, know that you’re not alone. Meditation and support from loved ones have been key to my emotional wellbeing. You’ve got this!

I genuinely hope these insights and product tips prove helpful in your journey!
