If you’re dealing with migraines, I’m here to offer some hope! Before or after diving into this post, I suggest checking out my previous article about common migraine triggers—it could be really helpful.
This week, I’m sharing some natural, drug-free methods to help prevent migraines.
**Natural Ways to Prevent Migraines**
1. **Elimination Diet**
To combat migraines caused by food sensitivities or histamine intolerance, consider trying an elimination diet. My book, “Joyous Detox,” offers guidance on this. Once you’ve cut out certain foods, gradually reintroduce them one by one to find which might be triggering your migraines. Keeping a migraine journal or food diary (which you can download here) is also a great way to track foods and drinks consumed before a migraine starts. Alternatively, a food sensitivity test can pinpoint IgG sensitivities if you want a quicker option.
2. **Anti-inflammatory Diet**
Staying away from pro-inflammatory foods like refined sugars and processed items, and focusing on an anti-inflammatory diet, can help reduce migraines. Include:
3. **Balance Your Hormones**
Hormonal fluctuations are a known trigger for migraines. Consult a practitioner for detailed hormonal testing if needed (I can refer you to someone). Other methods to manage hormonal migraines include:
4. **Light Sensitivity**
Many migraine sufferers experience photophobia, or light sensitivity. Common triggers include fluorescent lights, prolonged screen exposure, and changes in light levels. To reduce light sensitivity, wear sunglasses and hats indoors and blue light-blocking glasses when using screens. Resting in a dark room can also help.
5. **Odor Sensitivity**
Certain strong odors can trigger migraines. Try to avoid:
6. **Sound Sensitivity**
Loud noises can intensify migraine pain. Minimize exposure by:
7. **Acupressure**
Stimulating pressure points can sometimes ease migraine symptoms. Gently press these points:
8. **Acupuncture**
Acupuncture, from Traditional Chinese Medicine, can be as effective as some migraine medications for pain relief according to studies. It’s worth considering!
9. **Stay Hydrated**
Dehydration increases the risk of migraines, as our brains are about 75% water. Ensure you’re drinking plenty of water daily to stay hydrated.
10. **Get Enough Sleep**
Sleep is a powerful way to prevent migraines. When a headache strikes, avoid screens and rest as much as possible. If feasible, a short nap with a cold compress on your head or neck can reduce inflammation and improve symptoms. Maintain a consistent sleep schedule to avoid triggering migraines.
11. **Have an Orgasm**
While it might not be your first thought during a migraine, research shows orgasms can relieve migraine pain and might even prevent them. In one study, nearly half of participants found complete relief through this approach.
Though there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for migraines, I hope you found these tips useful. If you haven’t already, check out my earlier article, “Causes and Triggers of Migraines,” for more insights.
Next week, I’ll be back with information on natural supplements for migraine prevention and relief. Stay tuned!
Wishing you relief,

Comments and Testimonials:
– Joy, I’ve had migraines since childhood, triggered by foods, weather, and hormones, just like you mentioned. Tracking my food and triggers was key to narrowing them down. Thankfully, aging has eased them somewhat. I’m glad you figured yours out, too!
– Migraines and other health issues can really benefit from natural remedies. Over the past 20 years, I’ve been helping people with inflammation, allergies, anxiety, and more. Pharmaceuticals aren’t always the answer.
