I’m not surprised that I’m a huge fan of tea—and I mean all kinds! From herbal blends to lightly caffeinated green and white teas, there’s never been a cup of tea I didn’t want to cozy up with, especially on a busy day. While I’ve often talked about the health perks of various herbs (check those out in our Joyous teas!), today I decided to highlight one of my all-time favorites: green tea! So, make yourself a cup and get ready to discover why green tea deserves a spot in your joyful lifestyle.
Understanding Green vs. White Tea:
If you’re familiar with green and white teas, you might wonder about their differences. Is one better? Good news—they’re quite similar because both originate from the same plant, camellia sinensis, offering nearly identical health benefits. The key difference lies in their processing, which gives each its unique flavor and slight caffeine variance. Both teas began in China and are now cultivated in other places like Nepal and Japan.
Green tea leaves are usually pan-fired or steamed to stop oxidation, enhancing their flavor to be a bit earthier, with slightly more caffeine than white tea. When you brew green tea, it graces your cup with a gorgeous golden-green hue, although some find it can be bitter. If you love the benefits of green tea but not the bitterness, here’s a tip for a perfect cup: use water heated to about 80 degrees Celsius, not boiling, and steep for only 5 minutes. This prevents the bitter tannins from releasing, letting the sweeter, subtle flavors shine through.
White tea, on the other hand, offers a more delicate, fruity taste since it’s picked when young leaves are simply air-dried with minimal processing. It contains very little caffeine, making it ideal for those sensitive to its effects. Packed with antioxidants and phytonutrients, white tea is a powerful addition to a wholesome diet.
Choosing between green and white tea? Why not have both? Our best-selling Pure Radiance Tea includes them both! This organic blend is subtly caffeinated, with the earthy notes of green and white teas beautifully enhanced by the floral aromas of lavender and rose petals.
8 Wonderful Health Benefits of Green Tea:
Now that we’ve covered green and white teas, let’s delve into their health benefits. Remember, since they come from the same plant, their benefits are quite similar, though some nutrients may vary slightly between each.
1. Fights Inflammation:
Green tea is abundant in polyphenols, natural plant compounds with anti-inflammatory properties. Among them, the catechin known as epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is famous for reducing inflammatory markers in the body. Plus, recent studies suggest it has antiviral potential too! While EGCG is found in some cosmetics, drinking green tea boosts beauty benefits from the inside out.
2. Enhances Brain Function & Reduces Anxiety:
The combo of L-theanine and caffeine in green tea works wonders. Caffeine sharpens brain function, while L-theanine (an amino acid) has calming effects, increasing GABA in the brain—a neurotransmitter that quiets brain activity and aids relaxation, possibly reducing anxiety. This blend means even those sensitive to caffeine can enjoy green tea’s advantages without jitters. Additionally, these compounds work together, providing powerful brain benefits!
3. Protects Against Brain Aging:
Green tea doesn’t just boost brain function; it might also have neuroprotective properties! Studies indicate a reduced risk of dementia and cognitive decline related to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases with regular consumption due to its catechins. Age-related cognitive decline affects many over 65, so taking steps to nourish and protect your brain is crucial.
4. Lowers Cancer Risk:
While cancer has multiple factors, research links green tea intake to a lowered risk of certain types—like breast, colon, and prostate cancer—thanks to its antioxidants that fight oxidative cell damage and inflammation, both potential cancer contributors. Adding a cup of green tea to your daily habit can be a refreshing step in reducing your risk.
5. Boosts Metabolism Short-Term:
Green tea can temporarily increase your metabolic rate after drinking it through thermogenesis, helping burn more calories and potentially aiding weight loss. Studies show it’s associated with reduced body fat, especially around the belly. Incorporating green tea into your exercise and healthy eating plans can support your health goals!
6. Balances Blood Sugar:
Maintaining balanced blood sugar is vital for joyful health as it impacts everything from hormones to mood and cravings. Green tea enhances insulin sensitivity, making it easier for your body to absorb and use glucose. 7. Feeds Gut Microbes:
Optimal gut health is foundational to lasting well-being, with a strong, healthy gut microbiome playing a key role. While green tea doesn’t contain live bacteria, its polyphenols feed gut microbes like a prebiotic, supporting digestion and overall gut health.
8. Promotes Clear, Healthy Skin:
When used as an extract, green tea reduces acne due to EGCG’s antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. It also helps with rosacea by lowering inflammation and enhancing skin elasticity. Drinking green tea offers additional antioxidant protection, shielding your skin from UVB damage and premature aging.
