Habits for Maintaining Breast Health

Habits for Maintaining Breast Health

In 2012, I wrote this post after appearing on The Morning Show to discuss habits for maintaining healthy breasts from a natural health standpoint. Eight years later, these habits remain crucial for breast health.

Interestingly, 85% of breast cancer cases occur in women without any family history. Similar to chronic diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular conditions, diet and lifestyle play a significant role in breast health and should be included in our wellness plans. Breast cancer affects many people, so it’s important that we all take care of our bodies, including our breasts.

My approach focuses heavily on prevention, emphasizing that the foundation for fighting cancer lies in proactive measures. Whether you’re currently battling cancer or you’re a survivor, these tips aim to help you live in optimal health and happiness. Keep in mind, this plan is just the beginning, offering only a glimpse into the potential steps you can take to prevent cancer.

1. Dry brush your skin 3 to 4 times a week:
It feels amazing! Skin brushing (avoid the sensitive areas) helps stimulate lymphatic fluid movement, which can get sluggish if you’re sitting for long periods. Encouraging this flow is essential for your immune system and detoxification processes. I recommend using a brush made from natural fibers, crafted sustainably by women in Sri Lanka.

2. Take vitamin D daily:
Research indicates that vitamin D deficiency can increase breast cancer risk in both pre- and postmenopausal women. Since getting vitamin D from the sun can be harder in winter, consider taking a supplement. In summer, ensure you get safe sun exposure regularly.

3. Select clean personal care and beauty products:
Opt for natural products and avoid ones with chemicals like aluminum often found in deodorants. These chemicals can affect your fatty tissues, and toxins tend to settle in fat cells. Unfortunately, many mainstream products contain ingredients that disrupt hormones and impact your immune and nervous systems. Try using products free from the “toxic 10” ingredients, including natural deodorants.

4. Stay positive:
Your mindset plays a huge role in your health. A positive outlook does more than just lifting your mood; it impacts hormonal signals and can help manage stress, which is linked to many diseases. Meditation is my favorite tool for strengthening a positive outlook, and it’s changed my life for the better.

5. Move your body several times a day:
Physical activity helps maintain healthy body fat levels, which differ for everyone. Since fat cells create estrogen, having more fat cells can increase the estrogen in your body and raise cancer risk. Staying active is key.

6. Let go of underwire bras:
Free the girls! I made this change 15 years ago, and haven’t looked back. If you need more support, there are brands offering bras that support without underwire. This promotes better lymphatic flow, aiding in natural drainage.

Detoxification also plays a major role in preventing breast cancer. Your body needs to eliminate waste and toxins effectively to function well. When cells aren’t occupied with dealing with harmful substances from everyday products like face wash or deodorants, they can perform better. Regular bowel movements, ideally one to two daily, assist in detoxification. If you’re having difficulties, you might consider trying the Joyous Detox.

Eating fiber-rich foods is another great way to promote detoxification and lower breast cancer risk. Explore the recipes section on my website or any of my cookbooks for some high-fiber meal inspiration.

Remember, a healthy lifestyle starts with you, so keep your breasts joyful!

Thank you for sharing this fantastic information! I’m loving your new “posters,” especially the organics one.

Thanks for the tips! Do you have a recommendation for a non-underwire bra that’s organic and chemical-free? I’d love to get one but don’t know where to start.

What was the name of the tea you drank during the morning show? I missed seeing the box.

It’s Turmeric Ginger tea by Celebrations—a great brand.

I appreciate the endorsement of dry brushing; I’ve worn underwire bras for years and wonder if I can find similar support in other styles.
