As a nutritionist, I get asked about coconut oil a lot, and there’s plenty of confusion around it. To help clear things up, I’ve created an easy-to-understand graphic and a short video. Be sure to watch the video for important information on making sure your coconut oil is “hexane free,” as hexane is a harmful chemical based on petroleum.
If you’re interested in learning more about the health benefits of coconut oil, check out my article. I’m also curious about your favorite ways to use coconut oil and coconut butter.
Does a ‘certified organic’ label imply that the oil is hexane free? My coconut oil is certified organic but doesn’t specifically state “hexane free.”
Aurelie: I buy my coconut oil from Costco, and I’ve checked to confirm it’s hexane free.
Nancy: I’m a Costco member, too. What size is the jar?
Thank you, Joy, for clarifying this! I recently purchased LouAnn’s from Walmart and have been using it for a while. After learning more, I’ll return my current purchase and try Costco, as recommended by Nancy. You’re the best. – LG
The Costco coconut oil is 54 oz for about $16, and we use it for cooking. Also, try Artisana’s Raw Coconut Butter—it’s a delicious treat by the spoonful for a quick energy boost, though it’s a bit too pricey for cooking.
How do I make coconut butter?
Susana: If you’re wondering where to buy it, I usually get mine at health food stores, but some grocery stores carry it too. For ideas on how to use coconut butter, check out the graphic at the top of this post.
Hayleigh: For beauty purposes, stick with coconut oil. Coconut butter contains coconut flesh and is quite different.
Kate – Joyous Health Team: Many people use coconut oil as a face and body moisturizer and report benefits like improved skin and prevention of stretch marks. It’s linked to numerous health benefits.
Heather – Joyous Health Team: You can find coconut butter in most grocery stores, usually in the organic section, and health food stores. Artisana is a brand I’d recommend.
Ophelia: I don’t mind the gritty texture of coconut butter—it’s like an exfoliant. Is it okay to use it on the body, and does it have similar benefits?
Rachel – Joyous Health Team: That’s great! Coconut oil is also a good skin moisturizer, just avoid using it on your face as it can clog pores. We typically use coconut butter in food, but you can apply it topically if you’d like!
If you’re considering the Nutiva brand of coconut oil, they’ve changed their packaging and it doesn’t mention being hexane free anymore. Is it still safe?
I’m not sure. I’d recommend reaching out to Nutiva directly for confirmation. Generally, certified organic products shouldn’t use hexane.
