Clean and non-toxic personal care products matter a lot to me, and if you’ve been following Joyous Health, I hope they mean a lot to you too! That’s why I came up with this easy DIY body scrub, knowing you’ll adore it.
Every day, we’re exposed to countless chemicals from different sources. While some are harmless, others aren’t as safe. Consider those sneaky hormone-disrupting chemicals that mimic our body’s hormones and hide in our perfumes or body washes, and even those that lurk in our fat cells as toxic waste from the foundation we use.
Our bodies’ detox systems can’t always handle the sheer volume of chemicals we’re exposed to daily. Many people mistakenly believe they’re only at risk if they live near a toxic waste dump or work in hazardous conditions. But this concern goes beyond them. Many respected health experts remind us to be cautious about today’s personal care products.
A simple way to reduce exposure to these harmful chemicals is to avoid them, which is why I created this wonderful body scrub recipe. It’s like giving yourself a spa experience at home!
Note: Although the label says “sea salt,” I actually used Himalayan rock salt, but feel free to use either—they both work great!
This scrub will leave your skin silky smooth, and the refreshing scent will brighten your day. It exfoliates, nourishes, and renews the skin thanks to the rich vitamins and minerals in the salt and the natural acidity of the lemon. Whether you choose sea salt or rock salt, both are rich in minerals and help remove dead skin cells.
From the first shower, you’ll feel vibrant and full of sunshine. I’m hooked on it! While other DIY sea salt scrubs may add herbs or essential oils, I love the pure lemon scent and prefer it on its own.
The ingredients you’ll need are simple: salt, lemon, and your choice of oil.
Here’s the recipe:
* I used MCT oil, which is basically liquid coconut oil.
But you could also use sweet almond oil, extra-virgin olive oil, or any other liquid oil you like.
You may want to add essential oil, but it’s optional. Lavender or rosemary pair beautifully with lemon, but I personally love the fresh lemon scent by itself.
The best part is applying it to your body! I recommend doing this in the bath or shower. Take your time, remember that self-care is important, and appreciate your beautiful body. This is your moment. For me, these reminders help me appreciate the freckles that darkened during pregnancy as a sign of growing a precious little one.
I’ve just saved you the cost of a spa trip! This scrub also makes a thoughtful gift.
It should last for quite a few months since salt is a great preservative. Just avoid using it on cuts, as it can sting, and be cautious if you have psoriasis or eczema since it could irritate the skin. For more DIY recipes, check out:

Hello Joy,
It’s a perfect day to start making some positive changes. At 69, I have enjoyed nice skin thanks to my mother’s genes. However, I’ve noticed it’s losing its glow. I’m not afraid of aging but would love to maintain the radiance my mom had until she passed away at 101. She used expensive creams, though my aunty uses just Vaseline and has beautiful skin. Can you recommend gentle and healthy changes for aging skin? Congrats to you and your husband on your upcoming bundle of joy. Thank you.
Joy, do you keep the scrub in the fridge, or can you leave it out if sealed? This sounds like the scrub I’ve been searching for!
Hi Kristin,
It depends on how heat-stable your oil is. Since things can get steamy in the bathroom, I usually store my DIY beauty products in the fridge to be safe.

Thanks, Kate!
The DIY body scrub was so easy to make! I used coconut oil and Mediterranean Sea Salt since I didn’t have Himalayan. It smells amazing, and I can’t wait to use it in the shower!
Awesome! So glad you enjoyed it, Lisa!

Thanks, Rachel!
Is it okay to use fine sea salt, or should it be coarse?
Hey Jackie, you can use either fine or coarse sea salt.

I’ve been using Himalayan salt in cooking for a while now but didn’t know about using it as a scrub. I’ll definitely try this and tell you the results. I also bought a Himalayan salt lamp recently and love it.
Hey Jennifer! Yes, Himalayan Salt has so many uses! Let us know if you try the scrub!

Thanks, Joy, for sharing such a useful article. I’ll surely try your recipe; it sounds amazing. I’ve been using a Himalayan salt scrub for my skin, and it not only cleanses but also refreshes my skin.
Hey Betty, we’re thrilled you found it helpful! That sounds great!

Hi Joy! I’ve made this scrub twice now with coarse rock salt, sweet almond oil, and a lavender/lemon essential oil blend. I love it, and so does my husband, who raves about it! I’ve read that adding Epsom salt can enhance the scrub’s softness—what are your thoughts?
Ashley
I love that idea! Epsom salts are a great addition for sure.
I’m curious about the benefits of using pink Himalayan coarse salt?
It’s rich in trace minerals. Whatever you apply to your skin can be absorbed by the body, which is beneficial in this case!
Hello! I’m planning to use this scrub tonight after buying a tub of Himalayan salt. Can it also be used as a facial scrub, or is it only for the body?
I would not recommend it for the face; it’s too abrasive.
I’d love more advice or recommendations.
