My Top 6 Herbs to Grow Anywhere

My Top 6 Herbs to Grow Anywhere

I had such a blast creating this post and video! Back in April, Vienna and I started growing sprouts from seeds, and it was a delightful distraction during the uncertain times of the pandemic. This adventure inspired me to transform my balcony into a thriving urban garden filled with herbs, veggies, and other plants!

Vienna and I have truly enjoyed this project together. Each day, we make sure to water our herbs, as our balcony gets ample sunlight all day long. It’s rewarding to get our hands dirty, knowing it’s great for our microbiome! This gardening journey has also been a fantastic way for us to bond (I love teaching Vienna about it) and connect with nature.

Our salads have reached a new level of delight because we’re now adding at least three types of herbs to each one we make. Incorporating herbs into your meals is a fantastic method to boost their nutritional value. Herbs are packed with antioxidants that help protect your cells from damage.

In the video, I share my top six herbs that I use constantly. Even though dill didn’t make it into my garden this year, I still wanted to give it a shoutout for being equally delectable and nourishing.

Here are some delicious recipes that feature fresh herbs:

– **Basil**
– **Mint**
– **Oregano** (also known as “Mountain Joy”) — A key ingredient in “Italian seasoning,” perfect for pizza or pasta!
– **Tarragon** — This herb pairs wonderfully with chicken dishes and scrambled eggs.
– **Parsley** — Often overlooked, parsley brings a burst of nutrition and excitement to all dishes. Talking about it now makes me want to share a tabbouleh recipe.
– **Rosemary**

A lovely idea, Joy! Could you tell me where you got that green planter? I haven’t seen one like it before. Thanks!

Thank you so much! I absolutely adore this green planter! I’ve been searching for another one because I love it so much. I purchased it from my local Home Hardware, but they’ve been sold out since May. They informed me that it won’t be restocked this season, but I’m hopeful it might, as I’d love another!

Joy, your balcony garden sounds amazing! I can only imagine the aromas that greet you when you step outside. This reminds me of a potted parsley plant I once had. It was fun to care for and enjoy, but sadly, I didn’t use it quickly enough, and it ended up wilting from neglect. Is it better to grow herbs from seeds, or does it matter if they’re purchased in pots? And regarding antioxidants, do dried herbs still offer some benefits? I often choose dried herbs because fresh ones tend to mold quickly in my fridge before I can use them.

What’s the brand of the planter box?

It’s from Home Hardware. I don’t recall the brand, but I looked for it and they’re sold out everywhere! If you search their website, look for “lime green steel planter box.” Good luck!

Thanks, Helen! I did a mix of planting seeds and buying potted plants. If possible, I’d recommend opting for organic plants and seeds to avoid pesticides and fungicides. The only non-organic plant I have is parsley, but that’s alright with me. Starting from seeds is so fulfilling! Dried herbs are fantastic too and retain many antioxidant properties.

I’ve been growing many herbs too. Are you planning to dry yours this fall, and if so, how?

Yes, I’d love to try drying them if there’s any left! We’ve been enjoying them so much that I’m letting some grow back for a while, haha!
