I’ve written a lot about what triggers migraines and how you can naturally prevent them. Today, I’m focusing on natural supplements that have been effective in preventing or treating migraines. This topic is close to my heart because so many people suffer from frequent migraines, and many aren’t aware that there are safe, natural, and effective options available.
If you found this post while searching for natural migraine remedies, I recommend checking out my first two posts linked here and here. If you have questions or if there’s something I haven’t covered, feel free to leave a comment.
Please remember: this post is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult your healthcare provider for specific guidance, especially about natural supplements, to ensure they don’t conflict with other supplements or medications you’re taking. I don’t recommend taking all these supplements together. Instead, my goal is to share evidence-based options so you can make informed decisions.
Top Natural Supplements & Products for Migraine Prevention and Relief
**Essential Oils**
Certain essential oils have proven effective for treating migraines and can be helpful during an episode. I’m a huge fan of the Sage Halo roll-on, which I always carry. It’s a travel essential for me, as flying often triggers migraines. I find rolling the oil on my neck and forehead eases the pain, though it’s not a cure.
**Ginger**
I love adding fresh, thinly sliced ginger to hot water or enjoying a ginger-rich juice or smoothie. Besides easing migraines, ginger helps with gas and bloating when combined with lemon and water. However, for maximum benefit, consider taking a ginger supplement. This one’s my favorite!
**Magnesium**
**Omega-3 Fish Oils**
Omega-3 fish oils offer various health benefits. For migraines, both EPA and DHA play roles in brain function, nerve impulses, and inflammation control. Studies show daily fish oil supplements can lower the intensity and frequency of migraines, and they’re great for prevention. They’ve significantly reduced my headaches—now only one every few months. I take the same fish oil as my daughter, Vienna, because it includes lutein, which combats blue light effects. You might want higher DHA and EPA levels if you’re not using a kid-friendly version, but this one works for me, tastes good, and makes my hair shiny!
**5-HTP**
If you take antidepressants, don’t combine them with 5-HTP. Talk to your healthcare provider first.
**Feverfew**
I really like St. Francis’ Feverfew tincture—it’s excellent and available here.
**CoQ10**
I prefer this ubiquinol form of CoQ10.
As you can see, natural supplements can help prevent and treat migraines, but they’re just one part of the solution. For example, if feverfew works for you but migraines return after you stop, it might be because the root cause isn’t addressed.
To tackle the root causes of your migraines, try the following approach:
1. Eliminate common migraine triggers
2. Improve diet and lifestyle habits that might worsen symptoms
3. Use supplements that relieve migraine symptoms

**Joy**
Hey Joy, thanks for this info. Could you suggest a vegan Omega-3 alternative for those allergic to seafood?
Yes, definitely! NutraSea offers a vegan Omega-3. Hope this helps!
Joy, thanks! I’ve dealt with migraines my entire life, but they’ve been more frequent in the last five years. Now I get them about every two months, and they leave me bedridden, often causing vomiting. I’m looking for relief. Should I start with all these supplements, or just a few?
I’m sorry to hear you’re struggling. I wouldn’t recommend starting with all of them. Focus on a few that sound like a good fit for you.

I’m migraine-free with Sam E!
That’s wonderful!
Is there a best time of day to take 5-HTP?
Ideally, consult a natural healthcare practitioner about specific supplements, but research suggests taking 100–200 mg, 2–3 times daily with meals; use for two to three weeks to see benefits. However, if your migraines aren’t from low serotonin, 5-HTP might not help. I hope this helps you!
