Using Dry Shampoo: A Guide and the Benefits You'll Enjoy!

About eight years ago, after I decided to get bangs, my hairstylist recommended I pick up some dry shampoo from the drugstore, which turned out to be a must-have. It’s perfect for those of us who prefer not to wash our hair every day and for cutting back on time and water. Plus, it helps maintain healthy hair.

Back then, I rushed and bought the first dry shampoo bottle I spotted without a second thought. The following morning, I used it to tackle my greasy bangs and was repulsed by its fragrance. I checked the ingredient list and was shocked—and a bit embarrassed—that I’d bought an aerosol product without understanding its contents. Since then, I’ve always made my own because I couldn’t find anything remotely clean on the market. Later, I collaborated with eco-beauty expert Kathrin to develop a DIY dry shampoo, which eventually evolved into our very effective product available in the Joyous shop. It supports healthy hair even better than our original DIY version.

So, what is dry shampoo and how does it work? It’s essentially a powder that absorbs the oils weighing your hair down, giving it volume and allowing you to skip washes. Using dry shampoo reduces your hair’s exposure to water and heat, promoting hair health and saving water. You can even join the Joyous Health Natural Hair Care Challenge to test its benefits!

For those unsure about how to use dry shampoo, we’ve put together a video tutorial. Whether you have bangs or curly hair like my husband Walker, you can learn various ways to use it. When you try our dry shampoo, share your experience with #thisishowidryshampoo and tag me—I’m eager to hear what you think!

Here are two methods to use it:

Option 1: Sprinkle dry shampoo evenly over your hair and work it through with your fingers. Leave it overnight and brush thoroughly in the morning.

Option 2: Apply the powder to your roots, let it sit for a few minutes, then brush out any tiny beads formed by absorbed oil. The brush effectively removes these beads, though a blow dryer can also help.

Our Joyous Dry Shampoo stands out because of what’s absent: no harmful ingredients for you or the environment. You can check reviews and my Instagram to see how I managed with just one wash over my two-week stay in Austria!

We offer both “dark” and “light” formulas. The Dark Hair variant suits brunettes, blacks, and auburns, while the Light Hair formula is perfect for platinum, pink, light blue, strawberry blonde, blonde, white, and grey hair.

Watch our video featuring me, Rachel, and Walker’s playful hair flip, and let us know what you think of this new product! Plus, if you’re looking to clean up your personal care products, we also offer a clean and green shampoo and conditioner.

For a less messy application, use a big powder brush to apply the dry shampoo, let it sit, then brush it through.

Curious about which formula works for redheads or gray hair? Our light formula suits gray or white hair well, and for redheads, if you lean toward strawberry blonde, go with the light version. If auburn with brown tones, opt for dark. Even though I packed the wrong color—a light formula—and I have very dark brown hair, massaging it in still worked.

Need tips on reducing white residue with the dark formula? I suggest using less product. Lightly sprinkle and work through, then brush it out.

I’m thrilled you enjoy our dry shampoo! As a busy mom, it’s my go-to solution so I don’t need to wash my hair every day. It lasts me around 2-3 months—my husband uses it, too.
